The Real Deal vol. 9
Hello and happy (almost) Thanksgiving!
It’s been a long hiatus from sharing VC jobs as I learned the hard way, once again, that it’s difficult to work on a congressional campaign and successfully do almost any other thing simultaneously. Despite Alaska taking longer than every other state in the union to count ballots, special elections excepted, the Alyse Galvin campaign has officially wrapped. We didn’t get the result we were hoping for, but we did end up winning more votes than both Joe Biden and Al Gross’ senate campaign. I suspect this is the only congressional race in the country to do so? If any election nerds out there are aware of other congressional races that managed to outdo both their party’s presidential and senate races, please correct me! I admit our race was in an unusual situation with an at-large district.
As anyone who follows Alaska politics knows, things continue to be extremely loose. It was an honor to step into the fray for a couple of months.
Back to the VC world - there are a lot of great opportunities floating around the series of tubes right now! Many of them feature nontraditional application processes like no resumes/degrees required or are project/longform essay-based. I think these are terrific and playing field-leveling. I’m looking forward to applying to many of the opportunities linked below and hope you are too!
Open Positions
Last week Social Capital CEO Chamath Palihapitiya announced the launch of a new 3-year program, SC Emerging Managers, for 10 aspiring investors. More information in the Twitter thread below. Applications are due by December 15th to em@socialcapital.com.
Alexis Ohanian’s new $150 million fund, 776, also just posted the application for its Operators in Residence program. This is a one year program with the goal of turning start-up operators of all stripes into great investors and also features an atypical application process. 776 is accepting just 3 people in this inaugural round so may the odds truly be in your favor! Fingers crossed for you and me! My favorite thing about the application so far:
We encourage anyone to apply that may be interested, even if you feel you don't meet 100% of the qualifications above.
Applications are now open for Future VC’s summer and autumn internship cohorts. Paid internships will be available in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and New York. Applicants from outside those regions will be placed in remote cohorts.
Apply by December 1st to 645 Ventures’ part-time Investment Team Fellow position. It is paid, praise be, and the application is not terribly arduous.
All Raise’s VC cohort program is open once more to female and non-binary investors hoping to be wildly successful at the Associate, Principal, and Partner levels. You can join a cohort by applying here.
AlleyCorp is seeking applicants for its 6-month venture fellowship program. Fellows will “gain exposure to venture capital and incubation, build their deal pipeline and network, and meaningfully contribute to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in NYC and beyond.” Preference is for second-year MBA students.
Did I miss anything? You can now let me know by sending a kind or angry tweet @akclaireshaw.

Lerer Hippeau is open to talking to any underrepresented groups in tech about…anything! Ask them what they think about fleets or other practical advice here.
Speaking of LH, investor Meagan Loyst created a Slack channel for Gen Z VCs to connect, share ideas, jobs, etc. It’s taken off very quickly and all are welcome to join, even if your connection to Gen Z is just aspiring to have the youthful skin of a young person and not actually having been born in the 2000s. Check it out!
It’s Techstars Startup Week Alaska, of course! Hope to see you at some of the great events local entrepreneurs and investors are running.
BLCK VC is hosting an awesome event tomorrow on how to navigate your career in venture featuring a stacked panel, including Cheryl Campos from Republic and Del Johnson from Backstage Capital.
You can register now for a series of events hosted by Revolution in early December, including a pitch competition and sessions on HBCUs and building inclusive tech ecosystems.
Where Arlan goes, I shall follow! You can see her in conversation with Mellody Hobson at the Lesbians Who Tech conference on Friday, or at 5:00pm today with Sallie Krawcheck at UN Women USA. Note that the event today is not free, but all donations benefit UN Women programs.
In a world where you can only subscribe to one Substack, it should be this one, a true ray of light in these dark times! Thank you Samantha Irby.
